Welcome to the Madeira Hotel
The Madeira Hotel is located in New Zealand’s South Island in a small French settlement dating back to the early 19th century in a village called Akaroa. Approximately 1hr drive out from Christchurch on the Banks Peninsula, it is one of only two Hotels. The Maderia Hotel or Pub as it’s commonly known in New Zealand has accommodation for about 20 people in 10 rooms which range from single, twin singles to doubles. The Hotel has a bottle store, pokies in the local sports bar, and a licensed restaurant to cater for 50 patrons. French history and heritage is celebrated each year in Akaroa.
The Maderia is basically made up of four different businesses which are all integrated within the same building. It can differentiate itself from backpackers and restaurants because it provides all these services under one roof.

Often regarded as the Riviera of Christchurch for its bays and cobalt blue waters, Akaroa is a major vacation and weekend retreat. There is broad range for all budgets and it is an ideal destination for a romantic weekend or short break away from Christchurch. There is potential to capture new market segments and capitalise on Akaroa's French history and heritage with the Akaroa French Fest. Bastille Day and also the annual bike race from Christchurch to Akaroa “Le Race” where Akaroa is the finishing line.
Within 100 meters of the Maderia is the wharf which is available for harbour cruises, sailing adventures, and swimming with the rare Hector dolphins. Several restaurants and boutique shopping is all within walking distance in this truly remarkable setting.
This charming old French town, together with the incredible scenery encountered on the way, have assured Akaroa's popularity as a unique tourist destination.
